What the Sierra Leone Passport Gives in 2026: Visa-Free Travel and ECOWAS

I always say this early: a Sierra Leone passport is not a travel passport for Europe. Its value lies elsewhere. Here are the facts as of 27 October 2026.
Visa-free travel
The BRIDGES Passport Index of 4 October 2026 gives 63 destinations without a prior visa and rank 75 of 199. The BRIDGES visa-free article from June 2026 says about 60. The difference comes from dates and counting methods, and I always tell clients to check the specific country before a trip.
No Schengen, UK or US
Sierra Leone is on Annex I of EU Regulation 2018/1806, the list of countries whose citizens need a visa to enter the Schengen area. BRIDGES also writes that the passport gives no right to enter the UK or the US without a visa. If Europe is your goal, this is the wrong instrument.
ECOWAS
The member states
The ECOWAS website lists 12 member states in 2026, including Sierra Leone. Some BRIDGES pages written before the latest changes in membership still say 15, so I go with the ECOWAS list.
What membership means in practice
ECOWAS citizens benefit from the community’s free movement rules. BRIDGES shows a case of an entrepreneur from Lagos whose main reason was moving between West African markets. I do not quote the number of days of stay or the right to work, because I have not checked them in the ECOWAS protocols themselves. The BRIDGES ECOWAS article has more.

What else the status gives
| Point | What I know |
|---|---|
| Renewal | citizenship does not need annual renewal |
| Dual citizenship | allowed since the 2006 amendments |
| Public offices | some posts are closed to naturalised citizens |
| Passport validity and fees | not confirmed in official sources |
Who it suits
From my experience the passport helps people with business, family or projects in West Africa, and people of Sierra Leonean descent who want a formal link with the country. As a backup document for travel to Europe it does not help, and I say so before anyone pays. If you are weighing it against a Pacific option, read the Vanuatu comparison.
